GIANT MOTHS SPOTTED IN AUCKLAND, CHRISTCHURCH, HAMILTON AND WELLINGTON

Aotearoa, New Zealand, July 6, 2023 — Keep an eye out for an influx of beautiful giant moths throughout Aotearoa’s urban landscape this month. The moths are meticulously crafted artworks of Tāmaki Makarau artist Liam Gerrard.

WHEN + WHERE

This seasonal art activation will be on display until the end of July. Artworks are playing on 54 different locations nationwide (mainly in Auckland) and are well worth hunting down. Locations vary weekly. Street locations can be found here.

This week the artworks are at the following locations:

Liam Gerrard Explores the Fragility of Life in Captivating Portraits of Three Endemic New Zealand Moths Asaphodes Adonis, Asaphodes Chlamydota and Ichneutica Omoplaca.

In his most recent body of work, Gerrard has turned his attention to moths as a subject matter—an insect with an average lifespan of one to six months, but often surviving for just one to two weeks. Through his intricate paintings and drawings, the artist explores the evanescent existence of these creatures, reflecting on their brief time on Earth and the profound symbolism they hold.

Gerrard’s artistic process itself reinforces the concept of the passing of time. His attention to detail, coupled with the patience and precision required to create his artworks, underscores the themes of transience and the delicate balance between life and decay. Each stroke of his brush or pencil serves as a testament to the intricate beauty found in the natural world.

The contemplative nature of Gerrard’s artworks invites viewers to pause, reflect, and embrace the transient nature of life. By capturing moments of delicate beauty, he urges us to cherish the present and find solace in the ever-changing cycle of existence.
